Ontario's Insurance Risk Point System
When you receive a traffic ticket it's not just the fine and demerit points you should be concerned about, but also how it will affect your insurance rates. It will always be in your best interest to seek professional advice regarding the possible consequences.
The table below shows how many insurance risk points you will be assessed for each type of offence. The insurance company will hold the conviction against you for a minimum of three years. If you collect four or more insurance points you will become eligible for facility group insurance, this could increase your insurance premiums from 100% - 400% !!
The Insurance Risk Point System For Drivers With 4 Or More Years Driving Experience
No evidence of valid auto insurance for at least 12 of the last 24 months
At-fault accident (last 5 years)
Criminal code, or similar conviction (last 5 years)
Major conviction (last 3 years)
Minor conviction (last 3 years)
Automobile insurance fraud (no time limit)
Material misrepresentation (including failure to disclose on application form) (last 3 years)
Cancellation of a policy for non payment of premium (last 3 years)
