Provincial Interest - Manitoba

Most driving offences in Manitoba are 2 demerit points only.

8 point offences are:
  • Fail to Stop for Police
  • Speeding 49 over the limit
  • Fail to Exchange Particulars
  • Careless Driving
  • Racing
  • Drive Suspended or Disqualified

Any of the above, if convicted, will bring an automatic suspension of your Manitoba license. Any offence given in another province comes back to our province as if it was received here. In other words a 29 over speeding is NOT 4 points as in Ontario , but only 2. Whereas, I km over the limit is 2 as well, not 0 as in Ontario .

4 point offences are:

  • Misuse of license Plates or Drivers license
  • Littering
  • Obstruct Traffic
  • Make False Statement
  • Fail to Produce Liability Insurance Card

A conviction on any of the above will get you called in for a Show Cause Hearing and a possible probationary period or suspension. This will depend on your previous record.

Most other offences are 2 demerit point. There are some at 0, but they are few.

If you are in an at-fault accident and have NOT had an at-fault accident in the previous six years you will get a $200.00 surcharge on your DL, but will not lose your Insurance discount. If you have at least 1 merit mark on your license, you will receive a 25% discount on your insurance provided you have not had an at-fault accident or been convicted of a serious offence (i.e an 8 pointer). If you do not register a vehicle, you will get a $200.00 surcharge for an accident.

The second accident will carry a $400.00 surcharge with 36 months, the third $800.00, the 4 th $1200.00. You will also lose your Insurance discount for 1 whole year and then get it back at the rate of 5% a year until you get it back in full after 5 years to the 25% mark.

After two accidents you will more than likely have to take a defensive driving course.

With a graduated license, you may not lose your license for a 2 point offence, but it will be up to Motor Vehicle Branch to decide this. Before the graduated system it was automatic to be suspended for an offence on probation, not they do it on a case by case basis.

Camera tickets do not carry demerit points, but non-payment will allow MVB to hold the renewal of your driver's license and registration. There is no statute of limitations on unpaid traffic fines.
