  • Demerit Points
Demerit Points and Traffic TicketsDemerit points accumulate against your license when you are convicted of a traffic ticket charge like speeding or careless driving. Each specific traffic ticket carries a specific amount of demerit points that has been decided by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario or MTO for short.
For a Full G License, when you reach 9 demerit points on your driver's license the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) may call you in for an interview where you must argue why your license should not be suspended.
Once your driver's license reaches 15 demerit points your license will be automatically suspended. This can happen quickly with 2 careless driving charges. For a G2 or G1 license, when you reach 4 demerit points the Ministry of Transportation will suspend your license. Demerit points stay on your drivers abstract or record for 2 years from the date of the offense.
Below is the list of traffic ticket and moving violations and their respective demerit points that your license will accumulate if you are found guilty of a traffic ticket.

  • Traffic Ticket Questions - What Do I Do First?

How to handle your traffic ticketIf your ticket is NOT a parking ticket.

After receiving an Offense Notice (traffic violation ticket), you have three options:

    • Plead guilty by paying the fine.
    • Visit a court office to plead guilty but make submissions about the penalty (amount of fine or time to pay).
    • Request a trial. Depending on what your traffic ticket says, you may need to either mail in your traffic ticket showing that you want a trial or you may need to visit a court office to file a request for trial.

If you do not choose one of the above options within 15 days of receiving the traffic violation ticket, or if you do not appear for your trial, a Justice of the Peace will review your case and may enter a conviction without you there.

If your ticket is a parking ticket.

    You have two options:

    • Voluntarily pay the fine.
    • Challenge the ticket in court. Depending on what your ticket says, you may need to mail in your ticket or visit a location specified on the ticket, usually the local parking tags office.

  • Traffic Ticket Questions - Do I Have To Attend Court?

On simple traffic violation charges where you have instructed us to enter a plea of guilty to a reduced charge, it is not usually necessary to attend court.

In the case of traffic tickets such as speeding tickets, it is seldom that our clients are required to testify.

Where you intend to challenge the allegation against you then it is only you that can tell the court what happened. Your POINTTS representative is by your side to conduct the trial, defend your rights in the proceedings and make argument on your behalf. We cannot tell the court what happened.

  • I would like to state my utmost appreciation for the great efforts put forth. Your commitment to service has allowed my son to keep his job and carry on with his life.
    Gary
  • I would like to add my appreciation for a job very well done. I was not expecting to hear back so soon and wasn't very optimistic about getting the reduction.
    Duncan
  • I was so happy to receive the email today that the charges had been dropped and couldn't be more pleased with the results. Thankyou for all you have done you made this as painless as possible for me!
    Samantha
  • I admire the efficiency and competence that you exercised throughout every stage of the proceedings that achieved the favourable results and successful outcome in conclusion.
    Edward
  • I appreciate you having the fine and demerit points reduced. You saved me the time and expense of attending court in person, which would have far exceeded the original traffic fine in the first place.
